heart brightonI went to the ever popular Brighton and Hove Chamber networking breakfast this morning. We got to talking about how the atmosphere of friendliness is, perhaps, quite unique to our city.

We’re all in it together. Success of our individual businesses will reflect on our community as a whole. If we all support each other and do business with a smile rather than a snarl, then I like to think that this has a positive effect on us all.

We all have competitors, but if you believe you’re offering a great product or service then there is room for us all. We’ll all win some, we’ll all lose some. But let’s stay friendly!

There are a lot of local cleaning companies who Green Mop competes with, along with some national ones. The national companies want to come in and “steamroller” the local ones. So my one plea would be to choose local. It may not be Green Mop, it may be one of my competitors, but please choose a local business. It benefits us all in the long run.

Absolutely agree!

We’ve had similar problems with large companies jumping on the cupcake bandwagon.

We don’t worry because we know their products are mass manufactured and inferior with generally a poorer level of customer service.

This is the benefit of choosing local!

And I can vouch for your cupcakes being SPECTACULAR!

I completely agree Racheal, well said! Being nasty to your competition really isn’t the way to do business down here as you’ll soon make more enemies than friends.

That’s why I’m so happy to be part of the Chamber, who aim to be as friendly, inclusive and encouraging as possible to our members - no matter what stage they’re at in their business and what kind of company they are.

Oh yes Jeremy, you have nothing to worry about. Your cakes are AMAZING. In fact… I could really do with a cupcake now. Do you have any lying around the office I can come and steal by any chance…? (Well, it’s worth a shot…)

Some people have an attitude of seeing every similar business as a competitor who they must beat down and grab the business from.

Competitors can become collaborators and even referrers.

Clare’s right, there are so many companies in Brighton that will refer work they can’t take on to their competitors. So it’s often good to meet people that do the same thing as you :)
