I know, I know.. you don’t like the idea of a reusable ‘feminine hygene’ thingy. But the benefits have to make it worth considering.

Disposable tampons and pads either end up in the waterways or in landfill. All those menstruating women makes up for a lot of waste.

But the main reason for giving this a go is for your ‘vaginal environment’ (that’s what the Mooncup website calls it! How delicate!). The Mooncup is made from silicon, contains no bleach, deodorisers or absorbancy gels, and it’s never been associated with Toxic Shock Syndrome. Using a Mooncup ‘allows the mucus membranes of your vaginal wall to continue their essential cleansing and protective functions. The Mooncup does not absorb your body’s natural defence mechanisms and will not deposit fibres in your vaginal wall.’

Now, I have a confession.. I’ve not used a Mooncup! I had a hystorectomy at 33 as I had cervical cancer, so I’ve no use for a Mooncup unless I wear it as a hat! I was a tampon user for 20 years, and I don’t remember ever worrying about it. The doctor could never be specific about what the cause was, and it could have happened for a number of reasons. But I genuinely feel we should do our best to choose the healthiest, safest option for our bodies.

So try to get over the eeeuuuuwwwww feeling about having a reusable thingy!

You can find out more, and order directly by going to the  Mooncup website

And my last preach for the day… HAVE REGULAR SMEAR TESTS!

Thanks for another great post Racheal.

I’ve used a Mooncup for about a year now and love it. I wouldn’t go back to tampons, ever. You may not think so before you try one, but they are actually a lot less messy than you may think, and the whole process feels a whole lot more hygienic than tampons or pads.

My apologies for hijacking your recent comments box.

Hi Tracy, I appreciate your regular comments. Especially on this one, as I haven’t used a mooncup, it’s really great to hear the opinion of an actual mooncupper!
Does it just take a bit of getting used to? I think it is the mess factor that would put women off.

It’s a lot less messy that I originally thought it would be. In fact, after using the mooncup for a while, the thought of tampons or pads is just yeuch!

I’m a ‘mooncupper’ too and want to tell everyone how amazing they are. It’s only once you use one that you realise quite how wasteful and icky tampons are. As for the whole ‘vaginal environment’ question - whether are not there are health risks with tampons, I definitely feel a lot more comfortable, normal and healthier in a day-to-day way using a mooncup. It’s actually not periods that dry you out, it’s the tampons… who’d'a thunk. Get one, try it, then feel smug.

I have considered using a mooncup for sometime now and last month I decided enough was enough so I ordered one. Well I used mine for the first time today and I am so impressed. At first it was uncomfortable so I called the helpline and all I needed to do was to cut off the stem. I did think that I would stay home this afternoon to see how things went but within 1hour I tried to see if I was comfortable enough to do some training on my exercise bike and that felt as if I did’t even have my period so I then confidently went out for a walk for a couple of hours and now feel that I will never, ever use nasty chemically infested tampons again. Hurrah for the mooncup! Several of my friends have bought them and not used them as they feel the transition is quite scary but I will let them know how simple, easy and comfortable the mooncup is to use.
