Why are we surprised that women who work at home have a higher incidence of cancer? The Environmental Protection Agency has ranked indoor air 4th in environmental causes of cancer. Though we like to think of our homes as safe havens, the cleanest homes have more carcinogens than walking the sidewalks of downtown LA. What can we do? Invest in alternative household cleaners and toss the majority of products you have in your closets. Alternative cleaners and old fashioned remedies frequently work just as well at a fraction of the cost…both to your checkbook and your life. Test your home for radon. Exposure to radon in the home is the leading cause of lung cancer following smoking, and a simple kit purchased at your local hardware store can determine the level in your home. Buy a few houseplants. NASA has studies houseplants for their ability to absorb household carcinogens. Lynne Eldridge M.D. Post a comment
